Biotech Revolution Playlist: www.youtube.com www.youtube.com Genetics and Biotechnology promise a future of unprecedented health and longevity: DNA screening could prevent many diseases, gene therapy could cure them and, thanks to lab-grown organs, the human body could be repaired as easily as a car, with spare parts readily available. Ultimately, the ageing process itself could be slowed down or even halted. Leading theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku looks at the revolution in genetics and biotechnology, which promises unprecedented health and longevity but also raises the spectre of a Frankenstein future of genetically engineered people. Will we, as transhumanists expect, evolve into a new species? Dr Kaku warns that we may end up in a world divided by genetic apartheid. Visions of the Future: Episode 1: The Intelligence Revolution www.youtube.com Theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku shows how, in the 21st century, artificial intelligence is going to become as ubiquitous as electricity, how robots with human-level intelligence may finally become a reality, and how we'll even be able to merge our minds with machine intelligence. As the challenges and choices are literally mind-bending, Dr Kaku asks how far we will ultimately go. Episode 2: The Biotech Revolution www.youtube.com Leading theoretical physicist and futurist Michio Kaku looks at the revolution in genetics and biotechnology, which promises unprecedented health and longevity but also ... |

In Vivo : Selected Stories of Genetic Engineering (1996)- Robert Wyrod This experimental documentary examines the frontiers of human genetic engineering. It explores the ethical terrain of the emerging field of human gene therapy research and includes original interviews with the leading scientists working in this area. Director: Robert Wyrod Producer: Robert Wyrod Keywords: genetic; engineering; gene therapy; DNA; experimental; clone; molecular Contact Information: robertwyrod@gmail.com Creative Commons license: Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Human genetic engineering is the genetic engineering of humans by modifying the genotype of the unborn individual to control what traits it will possess when born.[1] Humans do not need gene therapy to survive, though it may prove helpful to treat certain diseases. Special gene modification research has been carried out on groups such as the 'bubble children' - those whose immune systems do not protect them from the bacteria and irritants all around them. The first clinical trial of human gene therapy began in 1990, but (as of 2008) is still experimental. Other forms of human genetic engineering are still theoretical, or restricted to fiction stories. Recombinant DNA research is usually performed to study gene expression and various human diseases. Some drastic demonstrations of gene modification have been made with mice and other animals, however; testing on humans is generally considered off-limits. In some instances changes are ... |

Complete video at: fora.tv Kyle Kurpinski and Terry Johnson, authors of How to Defeat Your Own Clone, discuss common misconceptions about genetic engineering. Kurpinski debunks the idea that genetic engineering will lead to super-predators, while Johnson discusses the foolishness of using clones as organ farms. ----- Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland is pleased to present local authors Kyle Kurpinski and Terry D. Johnson as they discuss and sign How to Defeat Your Own Clone. CAN IT READ MY MIND? WILL IT BE EVIL? HOW DO I STOP IT? Find out the answers to these and other burning questions in this funny, informative, and ingenious book from two bioengineering experts who show you how to survive -- and thrive -- in a new age of truly weird science. - Diesel Bookstore Terry D. Johnson received his Master's in Chemical Engineering from MIT and is currently a lecturer in the Bioengineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Kyle Kurpinski received a Master's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in bioengineering in the joint graduate group between the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco. |

What do pandas, bantengs, and panthers have in common? Their populations have all been assisted by biotechnology. Whether endangered, or unhealthy due to a lack of biodiversity, advances in biotechnology including animal cloning and assisted reproductive technologies, have helped these animals, and many others, to increase their populations, become healthier, and enjoy a more genetically diverse environment. |

Allele Biotech, now including Orbigen, provides services at all stages of the protein expression, production, and purification processes from gene cloning to large-scale fermentation. More than a decade ago, our technical staff offered the first commercial Baculovirus protein expression services to address researchers´ unmet gene expression needs. Today we are on the cutting edge of a variety of expression and antibody production technologies so that you can accelerate your research by taking advantage of our comprehensive range of services. In terms of protein expression, bacteria and yeast are commonly used to express a variety of proteins because they are more convenient and less costly than other systems. However, they may not be suitable for producing mammalian proteins with important post-translation modifications (PTM). Insect cells can be used effectively for producing large quantities of mammalian proteins rather easily through baculovirus such as Allele´s Sapphire system. PTM in insect cells is not exactly the same as in mammalian cells, eg different glycosylation patterns. Mammalian cells are used for proteins that require appropriate PTM or are not soluble in other systems through either transient transfection or stable cell line establishment. Allele Biotech is developing its own system to use baculovirus for expression in mammalian cells that will avoid high costs associated with large scale transient transfection, or the time consuming stable cell line ... |
